Non-contact Displacement Sensors for Automotive Markets
Capacitive non-contact displacement and thin gap sensors have made significant contributions to improving R&D, quality and manufacturing efficiencies for vehicle manufacturers around the globe. This is due to their many advantages such as:
- Small size, broad range
- Accuracy in the micron range
- Displacement measurement up to 1,832°F (1000°C)
- Immunity to magnetic fields
- On-vehicle DC modular electronics
Applications range from inserting a 4mm diameter button sensor inside a head gasket to measure precise displacements of the seal while the engine is running to installing HPT-500V sensors into automotive windshield molds to check gaps in-process at 1,472°F (800°C). Our sensing systems are used to test vehicles from economy compact cars to Formula 1.
Disc Brake Wear Analysis
Driven by Automotive Manufacturers, Tier 1 Braking Systems Suppliers and Testing Laboratories in the US, Europe and Asia, Capacitec has attained market leadership through the development of a new line of specialized non-contact capacitive sensors. The new model HPC-150C-H-IC-00 sensor assembly combines the benefits of small size and high temperature 750°F (400°C) operation.

Automotive Powertrain Testing
Typical applications range from muffler vibration and turbochargers to diesel fuel injection systems and piston ring position and movement.
As can be seen in the illustration by linking to the Automotive Article below, two high temperature Capacitec displacement sensors, measure 0.002” (50 micron) movements in the piston rings while fully immersed in engine oil.
